Barchester

A 00 Gauge Model Railway

August 2005.

Making up the large Metcalfe station building as I can't resist it's appearance. I will have two station buildings when this is finished and I like them so much that I have now thought of a scheme whereby I can use both of them.

This is the small, pretty little station building from Metcalfe.

The large Metcalfe station building. This kit comes with side extensions and platforms that I have not used as I alread have Barchester platforms built and this building is going to fit into the space made for it.

I have cut about an inch off the width of the main platform concourse area and that has extended platform 1 to a length of almost 5 feet so it has become another 4 coach platform.

The main station building will now be at the end of the platforms instead of alongside. Even though this is a big building it's proportions in relation to the platforms looks right. Because it's width runs across the platform concourse I still have room for the smaller, prettier station building to be mounted lengthwise down the other side of the concourse where platform 5 is. Not very prototypical but I do have a rational explanation which will be revealed in the Barchester Chronicles when they are eventually published on this site.

I have lifted the town area behind platform 1 by a good two inches and it looks better for it. After much playing about and viewing I have lifted the town area another couple of inches making it about 4 inches above platform level.

Final height for town area and I have made a rock face, Barchester is built on rock, up to town level from the edge of platform 1 track.

I have ordered another turnout as the 5 road fiddle yard is going to be a 6 road one. The sixth road will only be short but it is intended to be used only by the auto trailer from the bay platform at Barchester.

Intensive construction of Metcalfe town buildings going on and I think I have enough kits to finish the job.

Pair of house backs. Nice little kits to play with.

Neat corner shop which can be arranged several ways.

Rows of shops come in various styles and colours. There are also different fronts to the one shown so that quite an extensive area can be covered.

The addition of another road in the fiddle yard means I will have to alter the control panel. So many alterations have been made that the whole thing is even tattier now so I think a new one is definitely on the cards.

I have ordered a Hornby British Railways Class 110 3 car DMU set which is in the kind of green livery I like. Hope it's a good runner.

The grandchildren are here for the next two weeks so that's August finished with as far as modelling goes.

The Class 110 arrived and it is everything I could wish for. The difference in running qualities of these modern locomotives is staggering. It crawls along the track and through the maze of pointwork at a snails pace and not a moments hesitation, what a beauty. It's definitely more diesels for me. It could be of course that the new steam outline models are just as good but I will have to have more definite information on that before I go shelling out large chunks of cash.
