Each of the scales and gauges has it's own National Association and you might find it very useful to join the appropriate one. They have a wealth of information and in some cases can supply bits and pieces and that might otherwise be very difficult to come by. At the very least it is worth your while to visit their web site to see just what is on offer.

The G-Scale Society.
Essentially the modelling of narrow gauge railways on track 45mm wide. Ideal for garden railways.
The Broad Gauge Society :
Formed in 1980 to promote rearch into, and the modelling of, the 7' 1/4" broad gauge railways of Great Britain.
The Gauge 0 Guild.
The Guild exists to further all form of railway modelling in 7mm. scale and on 0 gauge track. With over 5000 members including over 500 outside the U.K. the Guild is a focus for 0 gauge modellers to meet, share and enjoy their mutual interest. To find out a little more about 0 guage modelling, please see the "What is 0 gauge?" page and "Notes for newcomers". If 0 gauge is your thing then this is one society well worth joining.
The Gauge 3 Society : One of the premier garden railway societies.
Lllawarra Model Railway Association - IMRA : Very active and practical association.
Modern Image Gauge 0 And Gauge 1 Group (MIGO+1).
MIGO+1 is a group of 7mm (O gauge) and Gauge 1 modern image modellers based throughout the United Kingdom ( with a small number from overseas) who are working to promote the modelling of the post steam era on British Rail and now the privatised companies in 7mm and Gauge 1.
AMRA : Australian Model Railway Association :
BRMNA : The British Railway Modellers Of North America.
BRMA : British Railway Modellers Of Australia.
The Gauge One Model Railway Association.
Understand why enthusiasts all over the world enjoy the thrill of live steam and electrically powered scenic model railways in Gauge 1 - The premier gauge. The above statement taken from the sites front page.
The 3mm Society.
Formed more than 40 years ago the 3mm Society was concerned mainly with Triang TT3 equipment but then the society developed finer standards and encouraged manufacturers to support the scale as well as providing it's own rolling stock kits, wheels, etc. This is a scale society and it's models run on many different gauges.
The 7mm Narrow Gauge Association.
The 7mm Narrow Gauge Association : The Association aims to encourage the modelling of narrow gauge railways at a scale of 7mm to 1 foot (1:43) or thereabouts.
The Scale 7 Group.
The Scale 7 Group : S7 railway modellers work to a scale of 1:43.5, 7mm to 1ft, and use true-to-prototype track and wheel standards.
The Scalefour Society.
The Scalefour Society : The Scalefour Society caters for the needs of railway modellers working to the scale of 4mm to the foot (1:76.2), the most popular of the British model railway scales. In particular it promotes and encourages the use of efficient modelling techniques and fine scale standards among all 4mm railway modellers.
The Train Collectors Society : Based in the UK this is a not for profit club for people who are interested in or want to collect or operate toy trains and commercial model railways. There are no limitations as to gauge, scale, manufacturer, nationality or age.
The E.M. Gauge Society.
The EMGS is the largest of the Model Railway Societies catering for the needs of modellers in 4mm fine scale railway modelling.
The S Scale Model Railway Society.
Railway modelling in 1:64 scale has been around for over 100 years and this society since 1946. Although largely a scratch builders scale there are a significant number of kits and parts available to members of the society.
The N Gauge Society.
The N Gauge Society : The N Gauge Society was formed in 1967 by a small group of N Gauge modellers from West Yorkshire, supported by the late Sydney Pritchard, the founder of the present day Peco Railway Models.
The Society's aims then, as now were to promote the gauge and encourage active participation in N gauge railway modelling. In the late 60's, the Society campaigned for British N gauge standards as, at that time, we were reliant on foreign manufacturers and Lima in particular were producing models that were hopelessly out of scale with coaches at 1:160 and wagons at 1:140.
The 009 Society.
The 009 Society : Are you interested in modelling narrow gauge railways in the smaller scales? If so, we would like to take this opportunity to invite you to join the 009 SOCIETY, the World's largest small scale narrow gauge modelling group. We aim to cater for all aspects of small scale narrow gauge railway modelling, both for the beginner and the experienced modeller alike, for the scratch-builder. the kit builder and the modeller who prefers proprietary ready to run equipment. Whether you are an active modeller or an armchair modeller, you will find a welcome in the 009 SOCIETY.
The 00 Gauge Association.
The Double O Gauge Association : We are the organisation catering for both new and veteran railway modellers working in 4mm scale using a track gauge of 16.5mm - the most common for models of UK prototypes.
The British 1:87 Scale Society :
For modelling the transport of Britain, including model railway British outlne, using the international H0 system.
The British Railway Modellers Of Australia : Welcome to the website of The British Railway Modellers of Australia Inc. (BRMA). The BRMA has over 500 members and exists to help promote the modelling of British railways, and to promote contact between modellers who have similar interests.
The New Zealand Model Railway Guild : The Guild does not have clubrooms but is a member of the Association of Model Railway Clubs and is there to assist, publicise and link together club activities relating to N.Z. prototype modelling. Each area has a representative of the Guild who will co-ordinate these local activities.

HMRS - "The Senior Society in Britain for the collection and exchange of information for historians and modellers of the railways of the British Isles." The Oxford Companion to British Railway History, Pub O.U.P.
The 2mm Scale Association.
The 2mm Scale Association : The 2mm Scale Association exists to promote and facilitate modelling at the scale of 2mm:1ft. The scale has a long history as the smallest practical finescale standard.
By joining the Association, members gain access to a wealth of knowledge and our exclusive component range designed to enable simple and accurate construction.
N.M.R.A :
The National Model Railway Association. This is the American National association and is a must visit for anyone interested either in modelling the American scene or just curious.
N.M.R.A. The British Region : This is the British end of the National Model Railway Association.
T Gauge Headquarters : For the smallest commercial train scale in the world.
The links shown below are only a very small selection of model railway clubs and also only those that have a web site that can be contacted from here. There are many hundreds more, with and without their own web sites, many of which can be found in the model railway press or your local library. Most of these club sites have links to other model railways which you can enjoy looking at in addition to those listed elsewhere in these pages. Local of course can mean different things to different people. Local in the USA could be 50 miles or more away whilst in the UK it could be a few hundred yards. Most of the clubs shown will be in the UK but there are exceptions.
