Barchester

A 00 Gauge Model Railway

November 2005

Very busy last month with things falling into place. I think you can see however the problems I have made for myself by rushing into the project without giving the layout as a whole adequate thought before I started. It's a question of don't do as I do, do as I say.

The road bridge is coming on still as a straight forward plate girder bridge with brick supports.
The supports are all finished, engineers blue brick paper covered card, and the road bed has been mounted on them so that the whole thing straddles the space I have for it across the tracks. Working on the plate sides and then it's the girder work.

Bridge not quite finished but I can see already that it isn't 'dramatic' enough for it's size so I am going to introduce overhead girder work at equal distances across it's whole length.

This is where freelance work really comes into it's own as it is my bridge and I can do what I like with it, so there. This will need 13 sections, each section having 3 girders with each girder being made from 3 pieces of card. It's a lot of extra work but I think the end result will show that it will have been worthwhile.

Well the bridge is finished and in position and looks ok.

I haven't got a photograph of the bridge before the top girder work was added but personally I think it looks much better with it. Terribly freelance old chap, what.

While I was working on the bridge I was thinking about the town area and have decided to make it wider ( town extension) by extending it over platform 1 supported by more girders (more freelance stuff).

The town extension in place, comes about half way down platform 1. Gives me about an extra 3 inches or so of width just where I need it.

I have also been busy adding foliage to some more tree formers. Fortunately the wire formers can be quickly made in any odd moment that you have spare. Keep the wires handy in several places in the house and then you are never short of something for your fingers to be doing.

The town extension is in place now and carriages look quite good moving up and down platform 1 behind the supporting girder work. Still playing about with the positioning of the town buildings but getting there.

I have got the town plan firmly in mind now and have been using Metcalfe cobble sheets for a row of town houses and a couple of house backs, all models from the Metcalfe range and being placed on the town extension.

I am pretty sure that this is how Barchester town will finish up. It's just bare at the moment, as are all the other pictures so far.

Also fitted a red brick wall along the edge of the town extension (stops people falling off). Using Metcalfe cobbles sheets at front of town extension.

Another month over and it's time to start thinking about what Father Christmas is going to bring us this year.
