Barchester

A 00 Gauge Model Railway

October 2005.

Not a good start to the month as the canal basin warehouse buildings, as designed, are going to be far too short in length to cover the whole of the canal basin side. Don't ask me how that has come about. I am not very happy with the results so far, nothing wrong with the idea, it's my implementation that's at fault.

Warehouses finished, minus all the detail, which will come much later, and in position. I have had another idea of how to fill the remaining space beside the canal basin and that is with the Barchester sand and gravel company. This will consist of 4 towers linked by conveyor belts to carry local rock for crushing to various degrees of fineness. The results will then be loaded into barges through overhead chutes at the base of the towers.

The towers are of a wooden construction (scribed and dyed card) and in position but not looking right. Too many empty holes where windows would normally go but in this case the holes are to let the dust out of the building where the crushers are located. (Nay lad, we can't afford ventilation fans here). Sorted that one out by fitting all the "windows" with louvered ventilating shutters and they look quite good. Now working on the chutes and the tipping area where the local rock comes in by lorry and tips it to start the whole process off.

Three of the towers of the sand and gravel works. Still more painting to do and then all the extras, people, wagons etc, but you get the general idea. I was pleased with the louvres and the way they hid those gaping holes.

The next job is another road bridge at the end of Barchester's platforms. Again this will be the full width of the layout and will be the visible road entrance into the town.

Have decided on design of the bridge and made a good start but am now off to Switzerland for a few days so that's it for this month.
